The foreground figure is Deedee, a fantasy heroine that I designed for a video game [link] I am programming. Deedee is a girl that Nana [link] took in when she was orphaned. Her parents went missing during a great battle during the last war.
Deedee is a shy girl who has yet to discover her magical abilities. Her best friend is a baby dragon [link] who loves to eat chocolate. Together they are searching for companionship in a violent world of swords and sorcery.
This painting shows her in a moment of thoughtful insecurity - daydreaming of the love she hopes someday to find. She sighs quietly by the beach and runs her fingers though her hair, feeling a little lonely but at peace.
Digital watercolour painting. Created with Corel Painter 11 in about 3.5 hours. I used two photo references, both created by me. The background is based on a photo that I took on July 5th 2010 while camping on Vancouver Island, Canada. I sculpted Deedee in 3d. Deedee has gone through many revisions over the last few months, and you can see several reference designs and 3d meshes in my gallery.
Digital painting is FUN! After several practice paintings over the last few weeks this is the first composition that I am happy with - it is meant to convey a self-conscious, insecure frailty while still showing her strength and an inner calm.
